EIAJ Says Japan's 1999-2000 Electronics Production Will Grow
January 1, 2000 (TOKYO) -- The Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) released an estimate and outlook of production for 1999-2000 showing a slight rise in Japan's electronics industries.

EIAJ said that the estimated total production in 1999 makes up for the poor performance in the first half of 1999, and is up a slight 0.4 percent over the previous year to 23,539.3 billion yen. This is due to the recovery of the economy and the increase in exports to Asian countries. (102.90 yen = US$1)

Notably, the production of electronic components and devices is up 3.9 percent over the previous year to 9,824.5 billion yen. The rapidly expanding production of liquid-crystal display panels mainly for information terminals helped push up the production of semiconductors and electronic components.

EIAJ forecasts that production in 2000 will make a full recovery to total 24,443.3 billion yen, up 3.8 percent over 1999. Showing a steady recovery, electronic components and devices are estimated to be 10,323 billion yen, up 5.1 percent over 1999.
