The Two Faces of Wireless: Consumer Disillusionment or Marketer's

Walk by any Radio Shack store in this post-Christmas season and
there will be a poster in the window for wireless Internet
services. A man holding a simple cell phone is evidently excited
about the fact that he can access Yahoo!, Amazon, and other leading
Web destinations through the same phone with which he calls the
office. It is all true, but is this level of marketing setting high
expectations?

The expansion and consumer acceptance of wireless Internet
applications faces some risky business in the short term. As the
new year opens, a slew of new wireless devices has been removed
from its wrapping and users want to play.

A recent report from the Cahners In-Stat Group shows that nearly 90
percent of wireless users want email, and two-thirds of those
surveyed stated that it is either "very important" or "extremely
important" to view attachments in email received on a portable
device. Some other key findings:

- Nearly 80 percent of those surveyed are "extremely interested" or
"very interested" in wireless Web browsing.

- 88 percent of those interested in browsing want both text and
graphic capabilities.

- Nearly 70 percent of wireless users surveyed want the ability to
pull content from the Web.

The demand is clearly there, but will the product pacify consumers?
