NYTimes. True Believers Push Satellite Telephones

nytimes.com

The satellite telephone business has two strikes against it, but that has not
stopped some entrepreneurs and investors from betting that the next
multibillion-dollar swing for the fences will indeed produce a home run.

Now at bat: Globalstar Telecommunications, which is controlled by Loral
Space and Communications. Globalstar is just starting to introduce its
service -- a $3.3 billion system of 48 satellites designed to provide
telephone calls nearly anywhere in the world.

Last year, Iridium L.L.C., which has been offering a similar service, failed
to attract nearly as many customers as it needed and was plunged into
bankruptcy, forcing its main backer, Motorola , to write off $2.3 billion.
Two weeks later, ICO Global Communications, another contender,
which had not yet launched its satellites, filed for bankruptcy protection
after failing to raise additional money from investors.

Despite such setbacks, Globalstar's stock surged to a 52-week high last
month. Many investors appear to be betting that Iridium failed because of
its own design and marketing mistakes rather than a fundamental lack of
demand for satellite telephones. Globalstar's chance of success should be
evident in the coming months.

But the biggest personal bet on satellite telephones is being made by
Craig O. McCaw, the billionaire cellular telephone pioneer. In
November, Mr. McCaw agreed to raise $1.2 billion to bring ICO out of
bankruptcy. He is also reported to be looking at investing in or buying
Iridium. And if those are not enough billion-dollar bets to sate his
gambling appetite, he still has Teledesic, a proposed $10 billion system to
provide Internet service using 288 satellites, starting around 2004.

No way was I implying that I was looking for that kind of gain out of GSTRF, when I made first buy in the 30s, I was looking for a double. I see that happening.

sevenseas.com is listed on globalstarusa.com as a seller of services and phones. I wrote to ask why there were no phones for sale on the site. The answer is below. Please note the commercial start date as supplied by them.

Dear Jim,
Unfortunately, we do not have any Globalstar phones in stock, and probably
won't until mid-January. There are 'test' models available from some
service providers, however, we do not have any test models available for
distribution right now. Commercial service begins mid-February and we
should have our phones in-stock by mid-January.

We are expecting the Globalstar phones to cost $1,495 with airtime minutes
costing $1.49 for domestic calls and $2.99 for international calls per
minute. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

Best Regards,

Terry Daniels

Globalstar phones tough to get part II (personal experience)

The other day when G* broke 40, I called a buddy who works for GTE in High Point, NC (Note: GTE,BEL,ATI,VOD) will merge US operations and BEL/GTE is already lined up as as US G* distributor - this all confirmed with my buddy) Guess what, same story. I can't get a phone right now. He'll call me when one is available - should be within a month.

My take on all this...Some distibutors have them, others wish they had them...

Regards, Dave

Maurice,

A friend of mine mentioned GSTRF today, as I had never heard of it before. I was reading through the thread and saw your name. I remember you off of the old INCE thread, which is now a dead stock basically. I remember you playing QCOM 2 or 3 years ago and I think of you every time I see that stock. You must have made a killing on that one.

Anyway, since you have proven that you know your stuff, I was just doing a little research into GSTRF and was wondering what advantage that they have over, say a co. like IRID?

Thanks for any input, and great to "see" you again.

Regards,

Paul Zimmerman
