Hello Maurice:

We have discussed new wireless optical links
several times on this thread. Lucent in particular
has a very high rate laser link. These are not
without problems, however. They are sensitive to
fog, flocks of birds, and require perfect alignment
(can be handled by locating them indoors). Obviously,
they require also line of sight. I think they will
be used primarily for building to building communications
in dry areas, so they will not displace CDMA, VOFDM,
etc...

Re. GSTRF, I understand where you stand. My assessment
is not extremely different. We both agree however that
there will be difficult times ahead.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy

CALGARY, Alberta ÿ Wi-LAN Inc. closed out 1999 with a three-way deal to acquire a controlling interest in
Digital Transmission Systems Inc. (Atlanta). Under the deal, Wi-LAN would acquire 1.7 million shares of
Digital Transmission Systems (DTS) held by MicroTel International Inc., giving Wi-LAN a 37 percent stake in
DTS in exchange for $520,000 and 28,430 shares of Wi-LAN stock.

Separately, Wi-LAN acquired from Finova Mezzanine Capital Inc. (Nashville, Tenn.) a $2 million debenture
convertible into DTS common shares at $1.00 a share, as well as an option to acquire 1.3 million DTS
preferred shares at a $1.00 exercise price, and additional DTS warrants.

DTS provides a variety of backbone products for wireless and wireline carriers, including the FlexT1/E1 line of
integrated network access products, and the microFlex cross-connect system. In addition to the equity
transactions, DTS is negotiating a license with Wi-LAN for that company's Wideband Orthogonal Frequency
Division Multiplexing algorithms for use in future broadband wireless access products.

The financial transactions involving DTS, MicroTel, and Finova all are expected to close January 7, subject to
regulatory approval.
