Company Press Release
Spanlink Lands $1 Million U S WEST Contract
Project Features Natural Language Speech Recognition from Nuance Communications
MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 3, 2000--Spanlink Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq SmallCap Market: SPLK), a leading software developer of automated customer interaction solutions, has signed a staged contract valued at approximately $1 million with U S WEST. The contract calls for Spanlink to develop a new call steering system that will provide state-of-the-art customer service for the telecommunications leader.

Spanlink has completed initial project development and will launch a first quarter pilot for the system. Integrating interactive voice response (IVR) technology and Nuance natural language speech recognition, the system will enable U S WEST customers to get the specific service they need quickly and easily.

With natural language technology, callers can simply state, ''My phone line is out,'' instead of using touch-tone keys or responding to voice prompts such as, ''Say 'one' if your phone line is out.'' Callers can speak requests for services including repairs, adds, moves, billing information and customized voice and data services.

''We chose Spanlink for this effort because they have a proven track record of integrating market-leading software from companies such as Nuance and delivering applications focused on the needs of today's customers,'' said Hal Wolf, U S WEST vice president of e-business. ''Our customers want choice and control. This innovative application provides them with a better, faster way to reach the right consultant - or to self-help, if that's what they choose.''

According to Brett Shockley, CEO of Spanlink Communications, ''This is a significant contract win that calls upon Spanlink's products, technology and voice system integration expertise.''

Developing the system, which will undergo limited customer implementation in the first quarter of 2000, required that Spanlink and Nuance team together to re-engineer the human factors of U S WEST's automated phone attendant. The goal is a system that provides faster and friendlier service by allowing customers to interact with the company through natural speech, and by providing intelligent call handling techniques to allow for the inconsistency in how individuals pronounce words and how they approach problems.

''Nuance's software is ideally suited for the US West application because of its extremely high accuracy, scalability and reliability,'' said Ronald Croen, president and CEO of Nuance. ''Our partnerships with innovative companies such as Spanlink enable forward-thinking companies like U S WEST to quickly reap the benefits of our speech recognition software.''

Nuance, www.nuance.com, is the leader in natural voice interface software that makes access to information, transactions and services over the telephone convenient and secure. Every day, millions of people place calls, make travel reservations, trade stocks and interact with other telecommunications, enterprise and Web-based systems running Nuance's speech recognition, language understanding and voice authentication software.

Spanlink Communications (headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota) is a leading provider of Computer Telephone (CT), Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and Web-based solutions for call centers. By integrating software packages that can be deployed quickly and with more customized solutions, Spanlink automates customer interactions for faster, more efficient service. Since 1988, Spanlink's technology and solutions have been installed in over 2,000 locations worldwide. Spanlink sells its products in the U.S. through a direct sales force and channel partners, as well as internationally through Lucent Technologies.

including trucking fleets, truckstop operators and trucking
industry suppliers and manufactures.

We believe the Internet will become a significant
communications and commerce medium for the trucking
community. In October 1999, we launched our portal website and
through it we are creating content for the entire trucking
community, including drivers and their families, industry
suppliers and manufacturers, truckstop operators and trucking
fleets.

Our objective is to capitalize on our position as the leading
provider of bundled telecommunications, cable television, and
Internet access services to truck drivers and our relationship with
others in the trucking community, to become the preferred
provider of communications and Internet information solutions for
the entire trucking community.

PNV's product offerings are designed to connect drivers,
long-haul trucking fleets, truckstop operators, advertisers and
trucking industry suppliers. We currently offer: In-cab
telecommunications and cable television; Internet access as an
Internet Service Provider; and prepaid phone cards, public phone

offer advertising for industry suppliers and other industry

programming guide and lifestyle magazine, Connect!, our portal
website and our voice response system.

Our Strategy
We intend to continue to deploy our network in additional
truckstops and increase subscription sales, extend our brand
recognition, expand our entertainment services and maximize
our strategic relationships. By providing a leading trucking
industry portal website, we intend to improve the lifestyles of
drivers and their families and the trucking industry's work
efficiencies.

Product Applications
Our products will enable business-to-business electronic
commerce applications for fleets, drivers and industry suppliers
to exchange information and conduct transactions, such as load
posting, freight matching and classified ads. We also are
creating business-to-consumer electronic commerce
applications to enable drivers and constituent groups to purchase
goods and services for their personal and occupational use.

PNV's networks and publications provide advertising
opportunities that allow advertisers to market their products,
provide links to their websites and target the driver market which
has unique demographic characteristics. Our portal includes
specialized content on a wide variety of subjects of interest to
the trucking community and those who interact with the industry.
One such example is the "lifestyle" segment that provides truck
drivers with interactive tools and services to personalize their
on-line experience, including e-mail, chat rooms, news, weather
and games.

Strategic Relationships
Establishing and maintaining strategic relationships is a key part
of PNV's business strategy. PNV has entered into long-term
contracts with approximately 450 of the approximately 1,100
full-service truckstops across the country. We also have
contracts with trucking associations representing more than 300
additional truckstops that permit us to offer our services to their
members. In addition, we have entered into strategic
relationships with truckstop operators and industry suppliers
such as Travel Centers of America, Pilot Corporation, Volvo
Trucks, Cummins Engine Company and PACCAR.
