My guess is people are taking their profits the first trading day of the year and deferring their tax bite until 2001.

How's that sound?

I have a WSJ cartoon that shows a couple looking at the evening news and says the following:

"Stock prices fell sharply today on the fear that stock prices would fall sharply."

Profit taking into the strength of the rally. NBD Today's sellers delay tax for 18 months. they gotta buy something back though.
