s CSCO tries to remake itself into a very different company?

I think this is perhaps where the disconnect is. CSCO isn't trying to remake themsevles into a different company - they are simply bringing their solutions to the carrier space in a more major way - they will continue to be successful in the enterprise space. As part of this effort they are adding requisite technology through acquisition.

You postulate that it is easier for the telecom players (with little experience in datacom) to penetrate the enterprise data market than it is for CSCO to penetrate the carrier market. And that is a valid discussion...however I think we've taken that discussion about as far as we can. It amounts to opinions and conjecture. The point is - all three companies will benefit from the build out over the next few years...and perhaps this is why you get so much resistance here.

Telecomguy, I'm interested in knowing why you think that LU or Nortel will be successful in taking market share from Cisco in the enterprise when countless others couldn't (Cabletron, 3Com, Bay, Cascade, Ascend, etc). What make LU or Nortel special?

The only threat Cisco has in the enterprise is from startups, not from LU or NT. Clearly, LU and NT are on the defensive, not the offensive.
