Dear Quent: Well, beginners such as I was often start out with AOL then its such a Pain in the A.. to switch what with favorites, email addresses and all we just hang in there and listen to the busy signals. I am getting fed up though. Never had busy signals during the day before, now I have even that. Am getting a new computer this year and probably will change providers at that time. JDN

I don't disagree with your thought process, but unfortunately, history in this sector doesn't completely follow through with that process.
AOL continues to grow at a much faster (real #) rate than all other services. Compuserve is the fastest %-wise, and AOL owns them.
The free ISPs have yet to make a strong case for themselves.
Many people are looking for community and expanded choice, not necessarily free services. That is why cable TV is so popular....it expands choice and opportunity.
