TiVo in video-on-demand deal with Blockbuster

DALLAS--TiVo, a subscription-based TV programming service, and Blockbuster
said today they will expand Blockbuster's video rental business to an
entertainment service delivered through TiVo.

The companies said in a statement that they would work
together to develop a "video-on-demand-like service" that
would let TiVo subscribers get a selection of movies for
viewing through their TiVo receivers.

TiVo and Blockbuster said they would work toward
deployment of the service in the coming year. The
TiVo/Blockbuster alliance also includes cross-promotional
opportunities.

Much-anticipated video-on-demand services, which offer the
ability to order and promptly watch one's selection from a
library of movies, are nearly a reality. Several trials of the
technology were announced at last year's Western Show,
the cable industry's answer to the Comdex trade show.

Digital video recorders (DVRs), which allow television viewers to pause and rewind live TV
by recording video streams to the device's hard drive, are also slowly gaining ground.
