Is paying $81 mil breakup fee a good deal? Well, that depends. I believe it is a good deal because it averts (over) paying $1.9 billion for Delta. The deal was in regulatory review for over a year so I would suspect the govt didn't like or wouldn't allow the deal to be consummated. This merger was dropped just after MTC announced their merger with PNU.

I think you'll do well LT with MTC, short term it will be a bumpy road with the merger & all. I think they're serious this time (as opposed to the AHP deal) because MTC will be owed something like $634 million if the merger is not consummated by 12/31/2000. Also, I am a firm believer in their Ag division with genetic engineering of plants for the betterment of the environment and mankind. Again, LT this could pay off handsomely.
