When it comes to internet connections I'm more of a pragmatist than anything. There is (as I understand it) another advantage to three computers with three modems, and that is that they all share the same network internet connection so you have speed and bandwidth where you need it and not where you don't. It really is cool though. I attached a link that might answer more of you questions better than I could. webramp.com

BTW, I like you idea of training a dog to move one mouse. <g> I don't know about all ISP's but both Earthlink and AT&T have a connection timer that interrupts service about once every 4 hours whether you are active or not. So keeping a connection alive is pretty cool. One of these days connectivity issues will be a thing of the past. Remember the early days of Prodigy? (LOL!) After a couple of days on it I decided that the internet was a joke and believed that strongly until about 2 years ago. We've come a long way.
