As the rink is only a block away he walked there after finishing up at the office around 8pm, stayed there for a few minutes, and then drove back home at about 8:15.

Why did he stay only a few minutes, having taken the trouble to go to the rink in the first place? If he only wanted to know the score he could have picked up a radio broadcast. Did he have a ticket, and can he show that it was punched?

The brief visit to the rink--or somewhere else, perhaps--might suggest that he had an appointment to meet someone who didn't show up. If so, of course it may have been completely unrelated to the crime.
