Workplace Rules Protect Home Office

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Labor Department has concluded that companies who let employees work at home are responsible for federal health and safety violations at the homes, The Washington Post reports.

An Occupational Safety and Health Administration advisory makes employers responsible for ensuring an employee's home office has ergonomically correct furniture, proper lighting, ventilation systems and emergency medical plans and equipment, the newspaper said in today's editions.

The OSHA letter says that when an employee works at home ``the employer is responsible for correcting hazards of which it is aware, or should be aware,' the Post reported.

The advisory - two years in the making - is not a new rule, but rather lays out the agency's position that the work-at-home policy is already in effect. The decision potentially applies to nearly 20 million adults who regularly work from home for an employer, as well as to those who work at home occasionally.

While OSHA officials said they will not be inspecting private homes, employers are responsible for any illnesses or injuries that occur in the home workplace, the Post reported. These injuries must be reported as if (cont)
