Intel sheds light on new wireless division By Ken Popovich, PC Week Online December 28, 1999 9:49 AM ETzdnet.com Intel Corp. is offering some specifics about its new business division, the Wireless Communications and Computing Group. CEO Craig Barrett, in a memo to company employees last week, explained his reasons for the change. "In reviewing Intel's challenges for the upcoming year, it has become clear to me that we need to change our structure so that we can better focus and align our efforts," he wrote. The new division fits in with Intel's ongoing strategy to broaden its focus beyond its dominant role as a chip maker for PCs and servers. Wireless technology is seen as a booming growth market, with mobile phones and digital personal appliances fu-eling the industry's rapid development. Intel's new division will oversee production of the StrongArm microprocessor and flash memory, both used extensively in cell phones, as well as digital signal processors, which process speech into digital data. The division includes DSP Communications Inc., which Intel acquired in October for $1.6 billion. DSP Communications is a leading supplier of chip sets, reference designs, software and other technologies for the digital cellular communica-tions market. New roles for execs The division will be headed by Ronald Smith, who previously served as vice president and general manager of the Computing Enhancement Group, which was folded into the new business unit. In addition to forming the division, Intel announced an expanded role for Andy Bryant, the company's senior vice president and chief financial officer. Bryant will now also oversee Intel's Internet business developments as the company's enterprise services officer. Among his responsibilities, Bryant will oversee execution of Intel's broad e-business strategy, worldwide delivery of employee services, and human resources initiatives, as well as provide companywide IT and finance support to the business worldwide.
