Matt, Junior,

PON has little directly to do with "optical switches," per se. PON stands for passive optical network, and it is a telco distribution network architecture comprised of fiber to the neighborhood, optical networking units and ATM protocols operating over SONET, in some instances. It usually utilizes passive optical splitters which deliver payloads to clusters of homes (at a pedestal), which, in turn, deliver data to the home over twisted pair, or coaxial alternatives. Again, they take it so near, yet, so far.
