Tulipmanina-- The Narrowing Continues:

Fidelity Seeks to Raise Magellan Cap

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Mutual funds company Fidelity Investments Inc wants its giant Magellan fund to be able to invest as much as a quarter of its assets in a single company, according to records.

Magellan, the world's largest mutual fund with assets of more than $100 billion, currently is limited to placing no more than five percent of assets in any one stock, with the aim of protecting the fund's investors with a spread of investments.

''The proposal would give the fund greater investment flexibility by permitting it to acquire larger positions in the securities of individual issuers,'' Fidelity aid in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

''In particular, it would increase fund management's ability, where appropriate, to over-weight positions that represent significant percentages of market benchmarks,'' the filing said.

Fidelity concedes that overweighting adds risk for investors but argues that it could enhance the fund's performance.
