The Stoics actually were inspired by both Heraclitus and Socrates. They believed that the Prime Matter was fire, what we would call energy, and that it was guided by the Logos (what we might call the Tao), and that the sage became one with Nature. They took this to mean, following their interpretation of Socrates, that the sage is indifferent to fortune. Interestingly, Diogenes Lartius, an Alexadrian scholar, reports that the "Socratic dialogue" was a form practiced by various philosophical sects, not merely the Academy.....
