RESEARCH ALERT-Web broker volume estimates raised
NEW YORK, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Investment bank Robertson Stephens on Tuesday said online brokers processed more stock trades than expected in the quarter ended Dec. 31, as share trading volumes at the nation's exchanges soared.

-- Analyst Scott Appleby said he expected online brokers to report a 45-50 percent increase in trading volumes for the fourth calendar quarter, from the third quarter. The analyst previously had estimated Web trading volumes would grow 20-25 percent.

-- Analyst said online brokers are likely to report better-than-expected earnings.
