Of course everyone has their own different reasons for participating on the discussion threads, but I view the threads "conversational". Depending on the topic or poster, some lengthy posts can be of interest. With the 10 message scanning ability, I usually just skim over them. Plus, if I want a lecture, I'll audit a political science or philosophy course.<vbg> bp
