W A S H I N G T O N, Jan. 4 ? President Clinton
was ready today to renominate Alan
Greenspan for another term as chairman of
the Federal Reserve System, administration
officials said.
Officials said the president would make the
announcement from the Oval Office today.
Greenspan was originally chosen as the
Federal Reserve chairman by President Reagan.
His handling of monetary policy has won praise
from Clinton administration officials, and analysts
credit his handling of interest rates with helping
continue the nation?s unprecedented economic
growth.
This would be Greenspan?s fourth term as Fed
chairman. He chaired the Council of Economic
Advisers under President Ford from 1974 to
1977. He also chaired the National Commission
on Social Security Reform, which recommended
major changes to keep the retirement system
solvent in 1983.
Greenspan joined the Federal Reserve in
1987 and Reagan appointed him chairman in
1988. He was reappointed by Presidents Bush
