Intel ratchets Celeron to 533MHz speed grade

Jan 04, 2000 --- Intel Corp. has ratcheted its Celeron processor up to 533 MHz, the company said today.

"Intel intends to remain aggressive in the value PC market segment in 2000," said Pat Gelsinger, vice president of Intel Desktop Products group, in a statement. Intel plans to introduce a number of new "value" PC and mobile products in 2000, Gelsinger said.

The value PC segment comprises all systems sold at $1,000 or below. Intel now offers Celeron processors at 533, 500, 466, 433 and 400 MHz speed grades housed in plastic pin grid array (PPGA) packaging. The Intel Celeron processor 533 MHz is priced at $167 in 1,000-unit quantities. The Processors are available today in systems from PC makers, as well as individually from Intel product dealers and resellers.

This low-key announcement makes me wonder - is Intel expecting some sort of AMD K6-2+ announcement soon?
