RESEARCH ALERT - Salomon ups Microsoft estimates
NEW YORK, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Salomon Smith Barney said on Tuesday said it raised its earnings estimates and price target for software maker Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news).

-- The price target was raised to $135 from $115. No time frame was given.

-- Earnings per share estimates for fiscal 2001 were raised to $2.05 from $2.00. A fiscal 2002 EPS estimate of $2.45 was set.

-- Windows 2000 is well positioned for a strong debut, with indications of strong demand for Windows 2000 at both the desktop and server level. Results from Windows 2000 should be seen more quickly than what had been anticipated, wrote analyst Neil Herman.

-- Microsoft plans to have Windows 2000 in retail locations by Feb. 17.

-- Shares of Microsoft are not receiving credit for its strong fundamentals. Strong initial product showings could add fuel to the company's performance.

-- Shares of Microsoft were up 1/8 at 116-11/16 in trade on the Nasdaq stock market.
