Walgreen Says Flu Season Helped Boost December Pharmacy Sales JAN 04,2000 DEERFIELD, Ill. -(Dow Jones)- Walgreen Co. Tuesday said December same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least one year, rose 14.5% from a year ago, in part because the nation's flu season helped pharmacy sales. The Deerfield, Ill.-based drugstore chain (WAG) said December's total sales rose 21.8% to $2.24 billion from $1.84 billion a year ago. Pharmacy sales rose 32%, with same-store pharmacy sales rising 25.5%. The company said a strong flu season helped pharmacy sales. Fiscal year sales-to-date as of Dec. 31 were $7.1 million, up 20.6% from $5.9 million a year ago. Same-store sales rose 13.% for the four months ended Dec. 31. Walgreen Monday posted a 23% increase in first-quarter earnings. The company said results improved on the strength of prescription sales and cost controls. Walgreen reported net income of $127.8 million, or 13 cents a diluted share, compared with $104 million, or 10 cents a diluted share, a year ago. The mean estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial was for earnings of 13 cents a share. Sales rose 20% to $4.8 billion from $4 billion. At least two prescription drugs - Tamiflu, made by Hoffmann LaRoche and Relenza, made by Glaxo Wellcome PLC - are available to fight influenza. Although the current influenza season isn't expected to be worse than it has been in the past, there are reports indicating that the flu started earlier and might linger longer. Many states began reporting cases of the flu in October. The flu season in New Jersey, for example, runs from November through early April, peaking in January and February.
