Demand and supply. Does Internet increase the pie or simply people change purchasing habbit?

Total US retail spending in 1998 was $1.7 trillion, on line sales was 0.5%. It is estimated the total spending might be $1.8 trillion in 2003 with on line sales of 6%. On line sales grow but total demand is not at the same pace. Thus, people are fighting on the same pie.

Can the same pie produce so much profit to meet present P/E in some internet stock????
