Rande: Ok, just when I thought i had seen it all, now we have FREE DSL SERVICE: Broadband Digital Group Launches FreeDSL, the First Free, High-Speed Internet Service for Consumers Registration opens today, with free broadband service to begin in April. NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. Jan. 3, 2000 - Broadband Digital Group today announced the launch of FreeDSL? the first free, high-speed Internet service for consumers, providing fast, "always on" Internet access over regular phone lines in the home. Consumers can begin registering today for FreeDSL? at www.freedsl.com, with service activation planned for April 1. Broadband Digital Group is the latest venture of Internet entrepreneur Ryan Steelberg, whose highly successful track record includes co-founding online advertising technology giant AdForce. Steelberg also formed and led 2CAN Media, an advertising sales and marketing firm, which was acquired by CMGI in 1999 to create the Adsmart Network. Steelberg served as Adsmart president, growing the company to become the largest independent advertising network. Steelberg's expertise in devising strategies for advertisers to reach customers with highly targeted messages will be a cornerstone of Broadband Digital Group's multi-tiered business model. The company has already received more than $3 million in initial funding from IMI IV, an Orange County venture fund. FreeDSL? will be made available free to consumers through support from advertisers and a strategic partnership with Winfire, developer of the personalized Browser Assistant. In cooperation with Winfire, Broadband Digital Group has developed a private-labeled FreeDSL? Browser Assistant, a small navigational bar displayed on users' computer screens while they are online. The FreeDSL? Browser Assistant can be positioned to any location on the computer screen but cannot be closed, and must remain visible on the desktop as long as users are connected through the FreeDSL? service. This enables advertisers and marketers to deliver messages to users while they are online. "We're shaking up not only the free dial-up ISP market, but also the paid DSL and cable modem service providers that are charging anywhere from $40-$60 per month for service," said Steelberg, CEO of Broadband Digital Group. "With FreeDSL?, we're also unleashing new opportunities for advertisers and Web developers who have wanted to reach online consumers with high-bandwidth advertising and content, but couldn't because most Web users access the Net with slower dial-up modems. We're changing all that by delivering on the promise to bring free DSL service to the masses." To participate in the FreeDSL? service, users must provide basic demographic and geographic information, and may be asked in the future for more detailed personal information. This information enables Broadband Digital Group to provide advertising and marketing partners with a "nameless" and generic profile, which they can use to customize the information delivered within the FreeDSL? Browser Assistant window. FreeDSL? users also will get a free POP3 e-mail account, a free high-speed FreeDSL? modem, a free copy of the Winfire Browser Assistant and first access to future broadband services as they become available. For advertisers and marketers, the service will offer direct access to a large high-speed Internet audience supporting general network advertising, content affinity and demographic targeting. Broadband Digital Group also strengthens the relationship between companies and their consumers by providing partners with unique desktop branding opportunities. While Broadband Digital Group is initially targeting consumers, it also plans to make the FreeDSL? service available to businesses. The goal, according to Steelberg, is to create the largest high-speed interactive network, offering a variety of premium services such as video-on-demand, software-on-demand, pay-per-view, online gaming and IP telephony services. About Broadband Digital Group Broadband Digital Group is the first and only provider of free broadband Internet access for the high-demand consumer market.
