as I've said, everyone has a perfect right to conclude the police must not be telling us the whole story about Jim (a false assumption, IMO...

Don't shoot me for playing devil's advocate, but what might the police know that they're not telling? That Jim was seen by someone later that evening? (Someone other than the witness who made a tentative identification of him at 9:30; we'll get to her later.)

I think it's reasonable to say that if Jim lied to the cops about one thing, they'd be inclined to doubt his entire story. So let's hope he didn't.
