17 million barrels of U.S. crude oil, gasoline and distillates stockpiled by distributors in case of Y2K problems were not needed, a research note from GNI Research said. The stockpiled petroleum should be returned to the U.S. market this month.

Jim, seems like mostly dumb wording more than anything. What the hell is a crude oil distributor or a gasoline distributor? Crude oil is primarily producer to refiner and gasoline is primarily refiner to retailer and with the vertically-integrated majors it is mostly the same corporate entity at each level. The product I think may have been unnecessarily stockpiled and will be pressured is heating oil which is sold thru distributors. The goofy eastern weather (56 in Buffalo in early Jan!!!) will also hurt but the storage numbers are way below last year.

Returned to market? Is that like Barnes and Noble returning books that didn't sell at Christmas? I think in this tight labor market some of these minimum-wage "journalists" get hired the minute they pass their high school equivalency tests.
