I don't know how they do it, but I have noticed too, that when funds or institutions are accumulating, they manage to do so without moving the price too radically

they can trade in the third or fourth market (Trading of listed stocks directly with a "Third Market Maker" or trading between institutions without the use of a broker/dealer). Neither affect NYSE or NASDAQ
