Just like an Operating System, a TP Monitor is defined as a comprehensive framework to support large applications.

Building the framework is fun stuff, majority of the development teams either use one (off the shelf) or develop their own. It is fun!

Making it a comprehensive offering is a different job altogether. IBM and BEAS are the only ones in this realm!

Every other framework is good, within certain application areas .. but not generic enough for wider applicability!

TIBCO is also a framework but focussed on special communication methods (publish/subscribe). Last I heard from people who used TIBCO and learnt BEA stuff .. TIBCO is not a comprehensive offering (from the point of view of a being a TP Monitor).

Other examples of these frameworks are:
Vitria - specialized in Application Integration
Silverstream/.. - specialized as Web Application Servers

The biggest advantage that TIBCO has - is its popularity in Financial Institutions. But I do not see TIBCO getting into BEAS' way. If you compare feature by feature, BEA products have a lot more to offer, compared to TIBCO.
