TigerPaw, actually G* is similar to Iridium in the following respect: The handset is either in cellular mode and acts like a cell phone when such service is available, or talks directly to a satellite when in sat mode. I don't believe it is ever the case that a G* phone talks directly to a G* ground station, which then relays the call via satellite. The Ground stations are few and far between - they talk to satellites on one side and the PSTN on the other-never directly to a G* user terminal.
