<<I don't think most people want to be driving around with a headset on.>>

I don't think so either, JGoren; although it would probably be preferable to the fellow I followed to work for a little while this morning who held his phone to his ear with one hand, waved the other in a very animated way as he carried on his vigorous discussion and appeared to be steering with his knees. Then, again, with a headset maybe he'd just be using both hands to make the wild gestures that were invisible to whoever was on the other end of the phone. <ggg>

My understanding of Bluetooth is that you could have a small speaker and mic surface (or otherwise) mounted in your vehicle that receive wireless (Bluetooth radio wave) signals from your mobile handset. You would simply drive and talk, using voice recg for dialing and other commands, and take your handset when you left your vehicle. Any Bluetooth device could be used, interchangeably. The vigorous hand gestures would be optional, of course. ; )

Speaking of bringing wireless to automobiles: yahoo.cnet.com

...Microsoft will also announce the latest version of Auto PC, sources said, the company's technology to bring the Internet and multimedia entertainment to cars....

No mention of WirelessKnowledge. Appears MS is dropping the "CE" from the handheld OS name and calling it PocketPC. Sounds like (another) desperate run at the handheld market.

I for one do want to be driving around with a headset on! I use a single ear headset. Believe me, the outside noise still gets way through, I'm not going to miss a fire truck or a horn beeping or squealing tires any more than I would with a car-kit.

A headset really does give you most of the hands-free benefit. Combined with voice-activated phone, I think a headset is the perfect hands-free solution.

My objection to car-kit hands-free (speaker and remote mic.) are that they still sound tweaky to the person you are talking to. I have used hands-free systems that sound GREAT for the guy in the car, but when I've asked the person I was calling what it sounded like to them, they did describe it as definitely inferior to when I was using headset, or holding the phone to my ear.

I don't think most people want to be driving around with a headset on.
