I noticed that CPQ paid CASH for Inacom's business assets.

I guess no one, including Inacom, wants to own CPQ stock.

I think that the inacom deal is exactly what Bill was referring to with his comment about "Bill Clinton adopting the Republican agenda". This is absolutely a defensive play by CPQ, however they dress it up, but that's all CPQ needs to do in the commercial PC space. They are, in that business. playing "fast follower" to DELL's lead, and if CPQ does that faster and better than IBM or HP, they will have achieved their purpose. Don't expect Capellas to get in front of the press and say "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" or anything like that but the actions CPQ is taking reinforce my belief that they are pursuing profitability and a clean business model over market share in the commercial PC business, and DELL is obviously the class act to follow in that space.

I said back in November of 1998 that by the end of 2000, DELL would be #1 in commercial PCs and CPQ would be #2. I believe that in fact that happened in 4Q99... if I subtract CPQ's consumer PC sales from their overall numbers, and do the same for DELL, DELL looks like the #1 player in the commercial PC space both in units and in revenue.

DELL is growing commercial share so fast that they may exceed CPQ's overall numbers this year despite CPQ's huge lead in consumer PC sales. We have the interesting situation that just as CPQ is emulating DELL in the commercial PC market, DELL is following CPQ's lead in the consumer space, with, in my opinion, a similar goal - if DELL can be the most efficient #2 in consumer PCs and the clear winner in commercial, they will win...
