Food for thought Re. HDR and Gateways: I've been thinking alot about what is taking so long to get these new gateways up and running?

I recall a poster on this thread saying that a service provider told him that the entire northwest could be covered by the Clifton, Texas gateway. Martel can cover the entire North Atlantic from gateways in Canada and France. It seems the coverage given by a gateway is broader than the folks at Globalstar anticipated. Kinda gives them a little breathing room I'd say.....

Now suppose right in the middle of all this a new technology came out that changed everything like Qualcomm's HDR .

Well if I were old Globalstar USA, I'd be mighty tempted to leverage my bonus coverage from the existing gateways to temporize a bit while the new ones could be upgraded to accommodate HDR technology. Then I'd leverage THOSE NEW HDR GATEWAYS while I upgraded the old gateways to HDR.

Kinda makes one think, doesn't it? Based upon what I've heard before I didn't think this was possible, but I'm no Rocket Scientist. This guy on Yahoo, though, seems to be pretty smart:

*Any* CDMA network can do broadband by adding an HDR modem (i.e., an ASIC) and the G* RF section (satellites) is just fine for HDR. It's just not announced yet because (maybe) QC is not ready to make the commercial commitment, but whether it is possible should not be in dispute.

I'm wondering what our resident Rocket Scientist and other technical experts on this thread think of this. Sorry if you all think this is way out there like my theory that regular cellular international long distance calls could be transported over the Globalstar network to use up it's excess capacity while the system otherwise fills up. It's just that I'm kinda limited on the technical side, so i try to maximize the 'vision thing'. Anyway, any thoughts on all this would be greatly appreciated.
