Succint as always, Michael<VBG>.....According to one of the Greek Fathers (I think it was St. John Chrysostom), God wills the salvation of all, and provides sufficient grace to each, should they avail themselves. This was, essentially, the Jesuit position adopted at the Lateran Council, against the teaching of the Calvinists, and the basis upon which the idea of Invincible Ignorance developed. Since, for example, the Americas were not Evangelized until after Columbus, what happened to those people? Well, those among them who made the best out of their traditions were saved. As I said earlier, even conservative Catholics, like William F. Buckley, have tended to extend the doctrine beyond its original intent, to include psycho- social impediments to proper religious instruction.........

One of my wife's grandfathers was a district supervisor of the American Sunday School Union. Although he brought his children up as Presbyterians, many of them went their own way into various fundamentalist sects. One of the oddities was that they would have tremendous arguments during family get- togethers over the smallest points of doctrine. It developed into a kind of "Pharasaism of Faith". Instead of one's righteousness hinging on precise observance, one "justification in Christ" hinged on whether or not one observed the Sabbath on Saturday.......One of the things that we fail to appreciate is how comparatively "liberal" guys like Robertson and Falwell are........

This brings to mind an old joke, involving another popular topic of late here, the punchline was "Do we have time?"

Cheers, Dan.

Can we say "screw you" to people without violating the Terms of Use? Because, if we can, I've been holding back unnecessarily . . . .
