Healtheon/WebMD, HNC in worker comp, car injury pact
ATLANTA, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Healtheon/WebMD Corp. (NasdaqNM:HLTH - news), an Internet healthcare company, said Wednesday that it has an agreement with HNC Software Inc. (NasdaqNM:HNCS - news) that will link workers' compensation and auto injury physicians and payors via the Internet, creating the first e-commerce network for this segment of the healthcare industry.

The alliance will enable property and casualty insurers and providers to process and manage medical claims via the Internet, replacing the traditional paper-based system.

Healtheon cited a survey from Milliman & Robertson, Seattle, and Coopers & Lybrand, Chicago, which concluded that the cost of processing and paying a workers' compensation bill averages $15.

By processing medical claims on the Internet, Healtheon/WebMD and HNC estimate that the average cost could drop to less than $2 per bill.

The total number of transactions required to process property and casualty medical bills is estimated to be in excess of 540 million per year, Healtheon said.

The current customer base for HNC Insurance Solutions, a division of HNC Software, represents 55 percent of the workers' compensation market and 17 percent of the auto market, and processes more than $17.7 billion in total medical charges per year.

The agreement also gives HNC an exclusive arrangement to incorporate its predictive fraud and abuse detection system throughout Healtheon/WebMD's Internet services for Medicare, Medicaid and commercial health plan claims.

The first applications are expected to be integrated into the Healtheon/WebMD offering by mid-summer 2000, and will be expanded to include bill review, preferred provider organization (PPO) repricing, utilization review and case management triage.
