Cirrus - <The problem seems to be one of the programs Compaq loads when the computer starts. One guy says he has a 5900Z and 58XX and has no problems at all because when he got the computer he disabled all the startup stuff.>

Wasn't it CPQ who made a bunch of noise several years back about not being able to modify the Start Up screen on Windows 95 (subsequently MSFT capitulated).

Ironic.

Cirruslvr, All the top tier makers use preloaded hard drives from a master source that make them at a high rate, far faster than someone standing there waiting for Win98 to install etc. If there is an error made at a high level, then all hard drives derived from that will have the problem. It has the advantage that the total win98 CD is on the hard drive and so driver mods are easy and fast, and it saves large amounts of time.
There is that one tiny problem though.
All the top tier makers add stuff to the preload and it is one of those items that is causing the problem. Easy fix....change the hard drive on everyone and use a working preload.

<This could be bad for AMD if Compaq doesn't respond correctly. AMD really needs other OEMs now. >

I am really looking forward to the 800MHz announcment as well as the conference call. My primary interest is the status of new OEMs and business SKUs. That is the only thing that is holding back AMD now.

Cringe - Re: ". One guy says he has a 5900Z and 58XX and has no problems at all because when he got the computer he disabled all the startup stuff."

He would probably have had the problem at least ONCE - wouldn't he?

Or did he disable the start-up stuff without booting his computer ?
