SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 2000--Percussionist, author, student, teacher,
social activist and the pulse behind the Grateful Dead, Mickey Hart will release the companion
album to his best selling book, Spirit into Sound: The Magic of Music on January 25th.

The Spirit into Sound album, whose inspiration came while Mickey penned its namesake book, features 12 majestic tracks
and special guest performances from notables such as Grateful Dead bandmate Bob Weir, Planet Drum vocalist and
co-composer Rebeca Mauleon and North Indian instrumentalist Zakir Hussain. The album will be a Grateful Dead
Records/Arista Records release and will be distributed by BMG International. In support of Spirit into Sound, Hart will tour
in Spring 2000, bringing the captivating album to life for fans across the country.

Throughout his long musical career, Mickey Hart has often unleashed the thunderous power of the drum. Spirit into Sound
reveals a gentler side of his artistry. The album's twelve compositions (composed by Hart and Rebeca Mauleon) marry
infectious rhythm to beautiful melody. Drawing upon his unparalleled collection of instruments and sounds, and deriving
inspiration from vast musical traditions from around the world, Hart has created a gorgeous aural tapestry. From the
irresistible grooves of ''Funky Peru'' and ''Lizard Dance'' to the evocative sonic landscapes of ''Hidden Beach'' and ''Indian
Night,'' Spirit into Sound is a stunning musical journey- one that moves the body and soothes the soul all at once.

Hart comments, ''Whenever I'm researching a writing project, sound images always appear in my dreams. My book Spirit
into Sound traces a written pathway of two thousand years of inspirations and insights on music from the greatest minds
throughout the ages. Together with composer Rebeca Mauleon, the Spirit into Sound CD brings forth these images into
sound.''

A continual student and connoisseur of rhythm, Mickey Hart has been an apprentice of music since birth. Throughout his 30
years with the Grateful Dead, Mickey produced and recorded with some of the greatest percussionists from around the world
including his partners in Planet Drum, which won the first ever World Music Grammy award in 1991. In addition to creating
scores and soundtracks to countless movies, Hart co-composed a major drum production for the Opening Ceremony of the
Centennial Olympic Games in 1996. Hart has also written three books: Drumming at the Edge of Magic, Planet Drum and his
latest, Spirit into Sound, which debuted at #1 on the Los Angeles Times Best Sellers list in December 1999. In 1998, Hart
took his lifelong passion for music to a political platform when he was appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Library of
Congress American Folklife Center where he preserves and digitizes one of the greatest sound archives in the world.
