The "value of the theft item" - not what you paid, right?

X,

I have a question for you. My son's vehicle was stolen last year and the thief was caught. As part of his plea bargain, he was able to get a reduced sentence in exchange for restitution. My son is being asked to document any expenses beyond what was covered on his auto insurance, ie, car rental, items left in the vehicle, etc. One of the items in his car was an antique camera that had belonged to his great grandfather. How does one go about establishing a valuation? Also his CD collection, replacement value or market value????
