Market Update

Market Update: Wed., Jan. 5, 2000
After suffering through one of the worst sessions on record yesterday, stocks opened mixed this morning with tech issues still showing signs of weakness. The weakness is in large part due to Amazon.com, which despite reporting higher sales has not managed to reign in its losses. Also contributing to the negative sentiment is BMC Software, which was down 25 points after issuing an earnings warning this morning. With overseas markets down sharply overnight and the bonds backing up again, indicating that concern about a Fed rate hike is not easing, this downtrend is not over yet. However, right now the fundamental basis for a sharp sell-off is not there, so this is most likely just profit taking, which will end when the weak bulls have been shaken out of the market.
