SGI Japan Spin-Off Opens For Business Thursday, January 6, 2000 TOKYO (Nikkei)--SGI Japan Ltd. has spun off its entertainment division into a separate company, Silicon Studio Ltd., and on Saturday the new firm opened for business. Silicon Studio was originally established by Silicon Graphics Inc. in 1994 to create computer graphics for Hollywood films, but the U.S. headquarters halted its activities in the field. Increasing demand for computer graphics, mainly from Japan's gaming industry, however, has resulted in a new unit. Silicon Studio will offer computer graphics environments for digital contents and systems integration, Internet services such as shopping malls, as well as manage a stable of graphics developers.
