Re:
<Even when UMC is @NT112, UMC value is more than a billion dollar. why only $908M even if you subtract a 100m initial investment>

This is a GAIN amount on the original investment which is the amount that should be reflected in the book value. Since the NT dollar amount is now higher (subject to change up or down) and the stock will likely grow (perhaps aided by the ADR's in late Spring), ALSC will still have a UMC stock asset 'hidden value' provided the currency/stock value increases in value (& doesn't recede which is not likely in 2000 IMHO). My calculations show that the initial investment looks to be about 124,000,000. (Does that jive with ALSC financial reports?)

Ram & others are right about the hope/expectation that core operations results and other (CMGI-like) investments are needed to propel this to $30 plus. Because of the amount of stock held by inside ownership and institutional holdings, the volume today (puny) shows that nothing major is really taken place. IMHO the news is being received as a net positive so far (or just waiting).

The $532M announced gain means that $12.66 needs to be added to the existing 5.65 book value (Yahoo) or $18.32. Plus ALSC's 'value' can be derived from the other unrealized gains in ALSC's assets (stock portfolio of BRCM, CHTR & UMC Group-in time) ....Are any of the new investments promising...to the bottom line...when?

We're in the low 20's book value (after taxes) right?

(Please correct any flaws in my assumptions and calculations above)
