Spitfire will have lower performance when compared to T_bird clock per clock owing to it's smaller L2 on-chip cache. It's performance clock-per-clock may equal if not surpass the current Athlons with off-chip L2 cache. Regarding Spitfire at 900MHZ - I'm not sure - it may come out in speeds 500 - 800MHz (Chuck, Cirruslvr - appreciate any comments on this?)

OR... why sell two parts with almost the same performance for two different prices?

Just imitating Intel's successful strategy of market segmentation.

Suppose, AMD made cheap parts only up to 650 MHz and expensive parts up to 1 GHz. What would Intel do? They would sell CuMine 128K parts all the way to 900 MHz and CuMine 256K parts all the way to 1 GHz. The parts with the smaller cache would be sold for the home market and average price on these would be $120. The parts with the larger cache would sell for $400 and be sold to the business market.

If there were only one Athlon brand at 900 MHz, it would have to sell for $100. The only reason Athlon is selling at $250 now is because the fastest Celeron is 533 MHz.

Why would anybody in their right mind pay $280 more for an Intel chip which is only slightly faster than the cheaper one? A: There's a lot of dumb business customers out there, and Intel controls the Tier 1 manufacturers to the extent that they won't offer business features in a cheap PC.

Once the CuMine 128K comes out, AMD has to have a product that can compete with it across its entire MHz range. The K6+ probably can't hack it once Intel starts offering CuMine 128K chips above 600 MHz.
