I think you're right. Now I seem to recall that Hungarian and Finnish are, as you say, entirely non-Indo-European and that's why they stood out in my mind as peculiar--that makes sense--i.e., they are not an isolated branch of the Indo-European tree; they are not even on the tree. Another example of a non-Indo-European language existant in modern Europe is Basque (?and others?). Basque I understand also has no known relation to other languages.

P.S.: I've heard that the Japanese language (but not it's writing system, which was borrowed from the Chinese) is also apparently unrelated to any other known language.
