Answer is no BUT: they cannot meet the ITU standards without using IPR from IDC. All are using IDC IPR's now but AT&T only licensee for TDMA which I understand is being used. Do not really have the details of their system but believe its bandwidth is not 3g like wideband by IDC which is compatible with TDMA CDMA GSM sytems and Bluetooth is proprietary and more expensive to install. Speed & cost will determine what is used, At the present IDC is leader of both.

The world wants global compatibility where all phones are interchangeable. NOKIA chose IDC because of the patents and engineers. Not because they were short of engineers as Jacobs was saying. Jacobs exaggerations are coming home to him. CDMA phones were not making him money. So he sold to get rid of loser. Now he is scrambling to find new technology to catch up with others.
