Grace,

I feel that we may be in the midst of this scenario right now. I believe that of all the net companies out there now this one may be one of a handful that can survive with your statement:

"Strong personalities or clowns?"

We're at a point in ATHM's evolution where the opportunity is so great that the "clowns" who run the company are having a hard time defining what they want to go after. So they go after everything and underperform expectations. Those expectations have nothing to do with missing numbers, not signing up subs, etc. They have everything to do with an identity crisis. This is particularly frustrating for shareholders to suffer through since the environment around the internet space is "gold rush". Frantic is the mindset.

The good news is that I believe that ATHM will do just fine despite the fact that monkeys are in the drivers seat. I'm starting to think that those monkeys are not long for this ride. The organ grinder is playing and the monkeys are dancing and noone is putting any copper in the cup so the man turning the crank is getting hungry. Now seeing that I'm the one turning the crank and my arm is tired...well those monkeys are starting to look good for reasons other than entertainment. They aren't funny any more and I just might roast me up a monkey pretty soon. Pick my teeth with that crank.

I'm not particularly happy thinking that as each day goes by the monkeys are vesting more stock.

Analogies aside, it's my view that ATHM will succeed in spite of this short term, short sited, just plain boring year.

I would also speculate that even though all of these examples had strong personalities at the helm, they would have been spectacular performers even if they had clowns at the top

In the cases you picked I disagree. Wonder what that says about ATHM.

Bill Gates was given a golden opportunity. Michael Dell and Steve Case created the opportunity. But in each case the competiton was fierce and these companies came out on top because of something special in the way they ran the business.

They would have failed without the clear vision provided by the leaders. Does @home have a vision? Yes. But it sure is not clear to the public.
