Looney for Linux (cult of Linux) The open source ideology of Linux has resulted in an operating system that is efficient and amazingly stable. Stability is more important than most end users realize. For them, instability in their OS just means having to reboot once in a while -- OK, more than once in a while. In a business application, however, what it means is solid servers that just do not go down, saving businesses millions over their previous network down times. An additional advantage to Linux is that it is scalable. Unlike Windows, Linux can be scaled to run in the smallest handheld devices, such as Palm Pilots and cell phones. We all know what an important place these and other portable information devices will have in our future, and we need an OS to run our little gadgets! But Linux can think big, too, handling the most taxing supercomputer computations. Comparing Linux with the world's most used OS, Windows, Torvalds told online mag boot, "Microsoft has been very much into making the user interface look good, but internally it's just a complete mess. And even people who program for Microsoft and who have had years of experience just don't know how it works internally. Worse, nobody dares change it. Nobody dares to fix bugs because it's such a mess that fixing one bug might just break a hundred programs that depend on that bug. And Microsoft isn't interested in anyone fixing bugs -- they're interested in making money. They don't have anybody who takes pride in Windows 95 as an operating system." Whoa, that's some serious dissing. But I have to agree; as I work, I can just sense the inefficiency of the Windows OS. playboy.com playboy.com CNET® Recommends Corel® LINUX® OS as Top Choice Corel® LINUX® OS is named the CNET® “Editor's Choice” as the best of seven major Linux distributions reviewed.linux.corel.com
