I saw Ed Koch (ex-mayor of NYC) on a talk show a week or so ago & he mentioned that there are 400,000 people worth a million or more in NYC. A million ain't worth what it used to be.

Mike,
However, you are not one of "The Millionaire Next Door" as defined in that book
Does this qualify me?
I had another phone line installed at the beach house today for my computer (tired of listening to people bitching that the phone is always busy) I had the phone company run the line to the outside only and I did the inside wiring myself with wire I bummed from the technician. I saved $55 per hour inside wiring charges. I also made $1800 today day trading Q*, what's wrong with me?

>> most of them (the "BOOK MND's") became wealthy thanks to living like cheapskates...a life somewhat governed by a (IMO) very peculiar self-denial

Funny how two people can read the same book and come to entirely different conclusions. Imo the Millionaire Next Door avoided conspicuous consumption, budgeted to live within their means, and spent a fair amount of time figuring out how to invest the surplus. I don't see that as cheap or self denial; I view it as a mature approach to providing for their families and their future.
