the paragraph about credit expansion and speculation in the '20's is what i found so interesting in light of the '90's Fed apparently repeating the same mistake under AG's helm. note that the term 'new era' is really in vogue again. the last time it was heard with such unwavering regularity was in 1929. that doesn't have to mean much, especially if it turns out that we really are in a new era (not a chance, imho). but it's worth noting, especially in light of the fact that the consensus in economic matters is often wrong.

JWK, econ.nwu.edu Robert Gordon has some interesting analysis on productivity. Search Business Week summer 99 for a short summary of his findings. Mike
