Taiwan's DVD Player Shipments to Exceed 1 Million in 2000 January 6, 2000 (TAIPEI) -- Manufacturers of information and home electric products in Taiwan plan to increase their exports of DVDs, targeting markets in the United States, Europe and China. Taiwan's DVD shipments are estimated to surpass the 1-million-unit benchmark for the first time in 2000. RAITE Optoelectronics Co., Ltd.'s December DVD player shipments exceeded 40,000 units. The monthly output is expected to reach 60,000 this year. Thanks to increasing orders from Europe and its move to boost sales in China, the company has a chance to become one of the world's top-ten makers of DVD players in 2000. As Aatek has begun mass production of optical pick-up head units, the most important component in DVD player manufacturing, Taiwan's makers have had higher hopes for the outlook of locally made products. Next year, RAITE will cooperate with its affiliate, Royal Information Electronics Corp. to introduce a television set with a built-in DVD player. On the other hand, Esonic Corp. is aiming at the portable DVD player market. Its DVD players without screens, a product designed to slash prices, are popular in Europe. Annual shipments of the product are expected to reach at least 120,000 units this year, comprising more than 10 percent of the global market. And the company will offer a portable DVD player that can be used in cars in 2001. Sampo Co. also is eyeing the DVD player market this year, targeting the United States and China as its major export markets. The company offers a five-in-one product, which can play CDs, VCDs, DVDs as well as the VCD and SVCD, with standards adopted in China. (Commercial Times, Taiwan) nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com
