Peter, that's right, the premiums become so large in a panic that you will profit only if you already owned the puts beforehand. aside from puts or shorting the QQQ and SPY only the futures remain as an option to go short. they trade 23 1/2 hours every day, so you don't have to put up with gaps too often, as long as you don't sleep that is <ggg>. Rydex short funds or Tice's BEARX fund are also possibilities to short the market, but you can't trade in or out during the day.

I think we are about there, unless you are nearly 100% right about where and how fast your target is reached or past. Which leaves you shorting calls and hedging - just capture the vols. If you can handle that. -g-
